Five characteristics of heart-felt problems
The deeper the pain, the more value you can get from your customers:
- Emotional — the problem must have an emotion attached to it
- Functional — the problem must fulfil the basic functional need of the problem
- Frequent — the problem must happen frequent enough for the user to justify the value
- Urgent — the problem must have an impending deadline
- Unavoidable — the problem must not have an easier way to get around the problem
Ask yourself: If this customer problem exists, where would your customers go to solve it?
Here are some questions you can use to get started:

What were those events that lead to your decision to buy/cancel?

What outcome were you looking for?

What solution were you using that was already in place?

What was all the alternative solution that was considered?

What solution was selected? Why?

What were some concerns/anxieties you had before you purchased?

One approach, made famous by Toyota, is the five whys, described by the architect of the Toyota Production System, Taiichi Ohno, as “the basis of Toyota’s scientific approach. By repeating why five times, the nature of the problem, as well as its solution, becomes clear”. This is an ideal starting point for any business initiative, whether it is a new digital project or a startup.
